Looking for Home is an exhibition that opened at Art Center Sarasota in January of 2024. Initially conceived as the Sarasota Project in late summer of 2019, this is an exploration through the eyes of a black photographer in search of a place to call home. In many ways it is anyone’s search for home; exploring idiosyncratic locations that define place, space, light and human dynamics. This is a personal quest to find the elusive elements that make one plant deep roots in a location both foreign and familiar. In this journey I have found Sarasota to be endearing, conflicted, charming and challenging. It’s is a fascinating place at a time of growth and expansion where the “old” and “new” South meet. The light is amazing. Life here is welcoming and guarded. Wealth, poverty, beauty and blight, magical spaces and harsh reality all coexist here.
